§ 65. Mr. Digbyasked the Minister of Works if he is aware that the Dorset Farmers' Union, who purchased Savernake House, Dorchester, last autumn, were promised possession of part of the premises at an early date, but that his Department have refused to give up any of the rooms except two attics and an outbuilding in spite of the fact that only a very small staff occupies the rest of the house; and if he will reconsider the request of the union.
§ Mr. KeyI am assured that no promise was made to the Dorset Farmers Union that possession would be given of part of these premises, which are used as a local food office. I regret it is not possible for me to release this accommodation at present.
§ Mr. DigbyIs the Minister aware that the Dorset Farmers Union have no alternative accommodation; that in fact there are comparatively few people occupying Savernake House for the Ministry of Food; and that the needs of food production are just as important as the needs of food distribution?
§ Mr. KeyThe staff at present housed there on the part of the Ministry of Food is 18, and since, also, this is a place to which the public have to have access, and where a public room has to be provided, I do not think the accommodation is in excess of the need.
