§ 36. Sir R. Glynasked the Minister of Transport if he has received from the main line railway companies an estimated claim under the control agreement for abnormal wear and tear of their assets from 1940–45 due to war conditions; what value was placed on the excessive use of permanent way and rolling stock; and 782 whether this abnormal wear and tear has now been made good.
§ Mr. BarnesThe four main line railway companies have made representations that their assets suffered abnormal wear and tear during the years 1941 to 1945, and have prepared assessments expressed at prewar prices amounting to about million. The bases of calculation of these assessments, however, have not been accepted by the Government. Little has yet been done towards making good abnormal wear and tear, but considerable orders have been placed for new rolling stock.
§ Sir R. GlynWill the right hon. Gentleman say what prospect there is of the assistance of his colleague the Minister of Supply, in getting this additional rolling stock?
§ Mr. BarnesI am afraid I cannot say that in reply to a supplementary question.
