asked the Minister of Food if he is aware of the defect which has developed in the machinery being used for extracting oil from pilchards for production of margarine; when he expects this plant will again be in operation; and if he will assure the House that this experiment will be continued.

Mr. Strachey

I know of the mechanical defect, but hope that the reduction plant will be ready to start again very soon. The experiment will be repeated as soon as the required quantity of pilchards is available.

Mr. Beechman

As the Cornish people in the past have been successful in extracting oil from pilchards, will the Minister bear in mind that this process has practical possibilities?
