HC Deb 13 February 1947 vol 433 cc521-2
50. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Labour the population of the city of Aberdeen, in 1919, 1939 and 1945, respectively; and what is being done to maintain it by discouraging migration to the South.

Mr. Isaacs

I am informed by the Registrar General for Scotland that the population of Aberdeen city was as follows: 1919, 167,000; 1939, 180,000; 1945, 161,000. With regard to the last part of the Question, it would be wrong to discourage unemployed workers in Aberdeen from taking up productive employment elsewhere.
