§ 48. Mr. Rhys Daviesasked the Prime Minister if he will consider appointing a woman as one of the representatives of this country at the forthcoming Peace Conference.
§ The Prime MinisterThe procedure for any further peace conference is still the 1956 subject of international discussion and we are therefore not yet appointing the United Kingdom representatives. I wish, however, to assure my hon. Friend that sex is no bar to choice as a representative.
§ Mr. Rhys DaviesIn considering this problem of the appointment of representatives to attend the Peace Conference would the Prime Minister bear in mind what has happened in America where the Government have appointed women who are doing excellent work?
§ The Prime MinisterOn these matters it is best to consider who will do the job best. In one country a woman might be the particular person whom it is best to appoint, and in another it might be a man.
