HC Deb 06 February 1947 vol 432 cc1961-2
57. Mr. S. Shephard

asked the Minister of Labour the approximate number of Service men it is intended to demobilise during 1947; and the approximate number of men to be called up for Service in the same period.

Mr. Isaacs

A programme of releases and discharges has not yet been fixed for the second half of 1947; for the first half of the year the programme includes approximately 200,000 men and 22,000 women. I estimate that about 175,000 men will be called up in 1947.

Mr. Shephard

Is the Minister aware that according to paragraph 9 of Cmd. 7018 it was stated that during 1947 there would be some further increase in manpower due to demobilisation, and if the Minister cannot reconcile the number of men to be demobilised and the number of men to be recruited, how can that statement be substantiated?

Mr. Isaacs

The Paper shows the number to be called up and the number to be released, and there is a balance on the demobilisation side.
