HC Deb 05 February 1947 vol 432 cc1767-8
47. Mr. Dodds-Parker

asked the Minister of Defence whether he will consider arranging for certain military training to be undertaken in Newfoundland, particularly in view of the wish to preserve Dartmoor and other beauty spots in Britain.

Mr. Alexander

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 28th November last, to my hon. Friend the Member for Maldon (Mr. Driberg). I am sending him a copy.

52. Mr. Spearman

asked the Minister of Defence if he is aware that the Admiralty, the War Office and the Air Ministry each propose to requisition land in the neighbourhood of Scarborough; and, as this will seriously interfere with the developments and amenities, if he will arrange for a more equitable distribution of this burden.

Mr. Alexander

The requirements of the Service Departments in this neighbourhood are at present being examined by the Inter-Departmental Committee, under the Ministry of Town and Country Planning, which is carrying out the review of Services land requirements generally. Full consideration is being given to the effect of any proposals on local developments and amenities.

Mr. Spearman

Will the right hon. Gentleman do his best to see that the great attractions of Scarborough do not cause her to suffer unduly embarrassing attention from the Service Departments?

Mr. Gallacher

Would the Minister of Defence make it his business to persuade the Government to take over the whole of the land and allocate it to the best purposes?
