§ 24. Mr. Lipsonasked the Minister of Education if the emergency scheme for the training of teachers is still open for would-be applicants.
§ Mr. TomlinsonI am sending the hon. Member a copy of Circular 141, sent to local education authorities last April, which explains the position in detail. In general, no further applications from men are being considered, but I am very anxious to recruit still more women.
§ Mr. LipsonHas the right hon. Gentleman, before deciding not to accept any more men applicants, made provision for reducing the size of classes, and is he satisfied that the alternative provisions allow men to enter the profession?
§ Mr. TomlinsonYes, Sir; I am satisfied.
30. Mrs. Manningasked the Minister of Education what steps are being taken to continue the training of teachers from the emergency training colleges during their first two years in school; and whether any special care is taken in the choice of schools in which these young teachers will serve their two probationary years.
§ Mr. TomlinsonI assume that my hon. Friend is referring to the requirement that teachers trained in emergency colleges should follow a suitable part-time course of study during their first two years of teaching service. Suggestions for this are contained in Appendix 3 of Circular 106, of which I am sending her a copy. Most authorities are now making arrangements on these lines. Local authorities have been asked so far as possible to appoint all newly trained teachers to schools of good educational standards where the head teacher or an experienced member of the staff can assist them in their work.
