HC Deb 11 December 1947 vol 445 c1183
38. Mr. Skeffington

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the problem facing firms all over the country in connection with the uncontrolled rise of rents for business and commercial premises and the high premiums now being demanded, he will consider setting up an official inquiry into this matter.

Mr. Belcher

My noble Friend the Lord Chancellor has decided to appoint a Departmental Committee which will consider, among other matters connected with the law of leasehold, whether it is desirable or practicable to control rents charged for business premises.

Mr. Skeffington

Is my hon. Friend aware that this answer will bring a little hope to the many thousands of small firms who are being grossly exploited at the present time?
