In addition to the normal protection given by the police, the Forestry Commission keep as close a watch as possible on all State woodlands. Warnings are published in the Press, and proceedings are taken against unauthorised persons found taking young trees, wood or foliage.

Mr. Noel-Baker

But in view of what happened at Christmas time last year, are special precautions being taken during the next few weeks?

Mr. Williams

Last season there were 43 cases in which offenders were prose in connection with the loss of young trees and holly from State plantations. In two cases sentences of six months imprisonment were imposed, and in other cases fines ranging from £1 to £50 or three months were imposed.

Mr. Joynson-Hicks

Can the Minister say how many prosecutions have taken place this year in respect of thefts already committed?

Mr. Williams

Not without notice.
