HC Deb 08 December 1947 vol 445 c761
14. Mr. Skeffington-Lodge

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that since the recent outrages against British Evangelical Churches in Spain, these have been occupied for their own protection by the Spanish police; and whether he will protest to the Spanish Government against such resulting practices as the closing of schools.

Mr. McNeil

I am informed that external guards have been placed on all British Evangelical Churches in accordance with the assurance of protection, given by the Spanish Government. No churches have been occupied by the police, and all services are being conducted normally. Protestant schools have not been open since the Civil War.

Sir Ronald Ross

Is not this police attention more likely to harass the British Protestant community in Spain than to protect it?

Mr. McNeil

That is not my information.
