HC Deb 01 December 1947 vol 445 cc4-5
14. Mr. Martin Lindsay

asked the Minister of Works what is the latest estimate, after allowing for increased building costs, for the new House of Commons Chamber.

Mr. Key

The present estimated cost of rebuilding the House of Commons Chamber is £1,779,050 for the actual building operations and £50,000 for furniture and equipment.

Mr. Lindsay

What possible justification is there for the continuance of this project at the present time, in view of the fact that the steelwork already erected does not deteriorate? Surely, the Government and Parliament should set an example by discontinuing this project for a year or two?

Mr. Key

The justification is a lack of absolutely essential accommodation for the carrying on of the business of this House.

Captain Marsden

Does this figure include all the rooms and other accommodation in addition to the Chamber itself?

Mr. Key

Certainly. It is the whole reconstruction which is contemplated.
