HC Deb 01 December 1947 vol 445 c10
30. Mr. Bramall

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he proposes to reinstate Mr. H. Ryder in his post in the Control Commission, following his acquittal after retrial by a Control Commission Court.

Mr. Mayhew

No, Sir. Mr. Ryder was retried on one charge only and acquitted. His conviction on four other charges still stands.

31. Mr. Bramall

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs why, at the recent retrial of Mr. H. Ryder, an official in the Control Commission, Mr. R. Taylor, who had been an important witness in the original trial, was not summoned to give evidence.

Mr. Mayhew

Mr. Taylor was not a relevant witness at the retrial.

Mr. Bramall:

Can my hon. Friend say how it was that, if he was a relevant witness at the original trial, his evidence was no longer relevant at the second trial?

Mr. Mayhew

At the first trial, there were five charges; at the retrial, only one.
