HC Deb 21 April 1947 vol 436 cc603-4
47. Mr. D. Marshall

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he is aware that boys over the age of 16 years are not accepted for the Fishermen's Training Scheme; that the fishing industry is in need of crews; and if he will consider allowing candidates over 16 years of age to take advantage of the training facilities and grant deferment from military service in such cases.

The Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Thomas Williams)

The Fishermen's Training Scheme is operated by the trawler owners and the local education authority at Grimsby, who have fixed the present age limit, the raising of which is, I under- stand, under consideration. Arrangements have been made for suspending the calling up of youths employed on trawlers based on ports in England and Wales which fish in the near and middle waters.
