HC Deb 01 April 1947 vol 435 c1840
71. Mr. Erroll

asked the President of the Board of Trade the export allocation for iron and steel to Canada during 1947; and how this compares with the allocation for 1946 and the total actually delivered in 1946.

The Secretary for Overseas Trade (Mr. Harold Wilson)

As regards the first part of the Question, the export quota for iron and steel is not allocated by countries. The second part of the Question does not, therefore, arise.

Mr. Erroll

Will the Minister therefore please give instructions to firms to increase their allocations to dollar-paying countries instead of sending their steel and iron to soft currency countries?

Mr. Wilson

The question of allocation or sending supplies especially to Canada has been very much considered, but I am sure my hon. Friend will realise that on balance we shall probably be importing steel from Canada instead of exporting it, as we always did, apart from special types of finished steel.
