§ 45. Mr. Errollasked the Prime Minister if he, will give an undertaking that workers' representation on national boards and investigating committees of the type being set up as part of the Government's industrial programme will not be confined exclusively to trades union officials.
§ The Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee)Persons appointed as workers' representatives on investigating committees should normally be appointed after consultation with the appropriate trade union body. The question whether persons so appointed will be officials will depend on the circumstances of each case. As to the boards of socialised industries, members will be appointed on their merits and persons associated with trade unions, as others, will receive every consideration.
§ Mr. ErrollWill the right hon. Gentleman withdraw the vicious statement of the President of the Board of Trade the other day when he said that workers were unfit to play any part in the control of industry?
§ The Prime MinisterI do not think that seems to be correct. Perhaps the hon. Member would put down any specific point to which he wishes to call my attention.
§ Mr. MonslowDoes the right hon. Gentleman not agree that the knowledge and experience of trade union officers in any new administration would be beneficial?
§ The Prime MinisterYes, Sir.
