HC Deb 31 October 1946 vol 428 cc779-80
49. Sir W. Darling

asked the Minister of Labour what steps are being taken to train the 75,000 unemployed persons in Scotland; in what categories are they being trained; and how many of this total are receiving no training whatsoever.

The Minister of Labour (Mr. Isaacs)

I cannot accept the hon. Member's assumption that if there are 75,000 unemployed persons they all require a course of training. Nothing could be further from a correct appreciation of the needs. Training is provided only for those who need it to enable them to get into suitable employment, and it is provided in a very great variety of occupations. The facilities are being expanded as rapidly as possible.

Sir W. Darling

Will the right hon. Gentleman give me an answer to the last part of my Question—how many of the 75,000 persons unemployed are not being trained? This is rather a large number.

Mr. Isaacs

It is difficult to say how many are receiving no training, because some are still receiving training in their own works, but the actual number receiving training in Government training establishments is 2,615 in five training centres. Another four training centres will be opened shortly and they will have a capacity of 2,000.

Sir W. Darling

In Scotland?

Mr. Isaacs

In Scotland.
