HC Deb 31 October 1946 vol 428 cc760-1
12. Mr. E. Fletcher

asked the Minister of Education what steps are being taken to deal with the development plans received from local education authorities.

Miss Wilkinson

59 local education authorities have submitted complete development plans and instalments have been received from 19 more. The plans are under active consideration in my Department.

Mr. Fletcher

Can the Minister assure us that the Department is adequately staffed to enable her to deal expeditiously with the proposed plans that have been received?

Miss Wilkinson

I do not think any Department is adequately staffed at the present time. It depends on what the standard of adequacy is in staffing, and mine is rather high. All I can say is that I do not think there will be any undue delay in dealing with the problem.

Mr. R. A. Butler

Is the Minister satisfied that the remainder of the development plans are coming along to time?

Miss Wilkinson

We have granted 87 authorities, including the 19 who have submitted instalments, an extension of time—many of them for very good reasons.
