HC Deb 30 October 1946 vol 428 c583
1. Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty what action he is taking to assist in the bringing to this country of British subjects resident overseas who are engaged to be married to naval or former naval personnel.

The Parliamentary and Financial Secretary to the Admiralty (Mr. John Dugdale)

Passages to this country at the public expense are not granted to the fiancees of naval or former naval personnel, and the Admiralty is unable to provide them with any assistance in this matter.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

In view of the assistance given by the American authorities in similar cases to the fiancees of their nationals, is it not possible for something to be done in this case?

Mr. Dugdale

I quite realise that the House naturally has every sympathy, as, indeed, have the Government, for fiancees, but it is difficult in the case of fiancees of naval personnel, and also of people in the other Services.
