HC Deb 30 October 1946 vol 428 c605
40. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement about the recent resignation of nine elected members of the Malta Council of Government.

Mr. Creech Jones

Nine of the elected members of the Council of Government resigned on 13th September as a protest against the arrangements proposed for the progressive reduction of the establishment of the Dockyard, and for the provision of alternative employment for the labour discharged. I am in consultation with the Governor on the situation.

Mr. Reid

Is it not a fact that the members who resigned were all Labour members?

Mr. Creech Jones

They were members of the Labour Party. The Governor is in this country at the moment and I am discussing the whole problem with him.

Mr. Stanley

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether, on the resignation of these nine members, there are any left?

Mr. Creech Jones

Yes, I believe that one is still there.
