§ 68. Miss Herbisonasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury how many students who possessed the certificate of fitness for entrance to a Scottish university were refused admission for the session 1946–47; and what percentage does this represent of those who made application for entrance.
§ Mr. Glenvil HallI am getting this information, and will circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT when ready.
§ Miss HerbisonIs the Minister aware that in Scotland great hardship is suffered by many students, particularly those from working-class homes, who do not even know that they will be admitted for the session 1947–48; and does his Department intend to exercise some control over universities who benefit greatly from the Exchequer, with a view to seeing that next year emergency measures will be taken which will result in more students being able to take the course?
§ Mr. Glenvil HallWe are always anxious to help as many students as possible to take these courses and enter these universities, but I am afraid the question covers a much wider field than is indicated in the Question on the Order Paper.
