HC Deb 29 October 1946 vol 428 c424
9. Mr. Bossom

asked the Minister of Works the approximate factory cost and cost of erection complete of the different types of aluminium house being constructed at factories in Bristol, Gloucester and Blackpool; and whether these figures include the normal overheads for which any commercial firm would have to allow.

The Minister of Works (Mr. Tomlinson)

The aluminium houses being constructed at Bristol, Gloucester and Blackpool are all of the same basic design and not different types. With regard to the factory cost and cost of erection, I am unable to add to the reply given by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Supply to the hon. Member for Abertillery (Mr. Daggar) on 8th July. Price negotiated with contractors will include an allowance for normal overheads.

Mr. Bossom

Are these costs not considerably above that of the ordinary, traditional house? Is it worth while going on with houses that will not give the same satisfaction as can be obtained by the normal methods?

Mr. Tomlinson

It would be impossible not to go on with these houses at the moment; we are so far ahead with them.
