HC Deb 24 October 1946 vol 428 c3
I8. Mr. Anthony Greenwood

asked the Minister of Health what were the infantile mortality rates for legitimate and illegitimate births, respectively, in England and Wales for the year 1939; and what were the corresponding figures for the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Bevan

The infant mortality rates, per 1,000 related live births for the year 1939, were 49 for legitimate and 90 for illegitimate births. The corresponding rates for the year 1945 were 44 and 65 respectively.

Mr. Greenwood

Is my right hon. Friend convinced that all local authorities are taking full advantage of the powers conferred upon them by Ministry of Health circular 2866?

Mr. Bevan

My hon. Friend has the advantage of me at the moment, but I should hate to think that local authorities make uniform use of instructions sent to them. They probably vary in their use of them.
