HC Deb 24 October 1946 vol 428 cc1-2
I. Air-Commodore Harvey

asked the Minister of Health how many ex-Service doctors are registered as unemployed at the latest convenient date.

The Minister of Health (Mr. Aneurin Bevan)

I regret that I am unable to furnish the information asked for. Ex-Service doctors seeking medical appointments do not register with the Appointments Department of the Ministry of Labour, and I know of no other source from which the figures could be obtained.

Air-Commodore Harvey

Does the right hon. Gentleman appreciate that a great many ex-Service doctors are unemployed; and will he go into this matter and consult with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, with a view to getting a special grant to enable these men to undertake some work; and will he give the matter full consideration?

Mr. Bevan

Special arrangements have been made already by me for appointments to hospitals, and special training facilities and grants are made. Where the reference is to general practitioners, I have not the figures which the hon. and gallant Gentleman asks for.
