HC Deb 24 October 1946 vol 428 c13
14. Mr. Gammans

asked the Minister of Health what is the estimated total cost of the erection of the new aluminium houses, including site and services; at what rent they are to be let; and, on the assumption of a life of 10 years, what will be the average capital loss to the British taxpayer.

Mr. Bevan

The estimated cost to the Exchequer of providing and erecting the aluminium temporary bungalows is £1,365 per house. This figure covers site preparation—excluding the cost of land, roads and sewers which is met by the local authorities—supply of hulls, erection, and provision of components and fittings. These houses, when erected, are let and managed by the local authorities as if they had been provided under the normal machinery of the Housing Acts. Assuming a life of 10 years, the estimated average net cost to the Exchequer will be £1,160 per house, but from this figure will fall to be deducted any sum realised from the disposal of the structure, fittings and components.

Mr. Scollan

Do these figures apply to the aluminium houses built in Scotland?

Mr. Bevan

Yes, Sir. They apply to all the aluminium houses.
