HC Deb 23 October 1946 vol 427 cc1639-40
13. Major Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will issue an instruction to British ambassadors in foreign countries that, in future, only British citizens should be employed by them in a confidential capacity.

Mr. Bevin

His Majesty's representatives abroad were informed last December that it is my policy that only British subjects should be employed on confidential work at Foreign Service posts.

Major Lloyd

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the fact that a Soviet citizen was recently brought from Russia and employed in a highly confidential capacity in an important Embassy abroad, and, if so, will he take steps to see that that employment ceases, in the light of the policy which he has announced?

Mr. Bevin

If the hon. Gentleman will give me particulars, I will look into the matter.

Major Lloyd

Does the right hon. Gentleman suggest that he is not aware of the name?

Mr. Bevin

I have not heard of it.
