HC Deb 22 October 1946 vol 427 cc1447-8
3. Sir Waldron Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, in view of the fact that the pilfering and sabotage of War Office stores is rife in Singapore and other places in S.E.A.C. area, he will take immediate and drastic steps to tally and safeguard supplies and avoid further loss.

Mr. J. Freeman

As explained to the hon. Member in reply to a Question on 23rd July, all possible action is being taken to safeguard military stores in Singapore. This applies also to other parts in that area. There is already a marked improvement and, with the progress of the reconstruction work and the restoration of more normal conditions, I hope for continued improvement.

Sir W. Smithers

In view of the fact that several Ministries are involved, will the Financial Secretary consult with the Secretary of State for the Colonies and the Minister of Transport to take what steps he can to clear up this unsatisfactory state of affairs in the S.E.A.C. area?

Mr. Freeman

Full consultations have already taken place, and, as I have told the hon. Member, a great improvement has been shown.

Sir W. Smithers

It is not borne out by the facts.
