HC Deb 22 October 1946 vol 427 c1447
1. Squadron-Leader Sir Gifford Fox

asked the Secretary of State for War why the agricultural harvest leave scheme does not apply to the General Service Corps.

The Financial Secretary to the War Office (Mr. John Freeman)

Soldiers remain with this Corps, as a rule, only for the first six weeks of their service, while they are doing their primary military training and are being tested and selected for transfer to the arm of the service for which they appear to be most suited. To give them working leave during this period would both interrupt their own training, and cause subsequent congestion in the units, leading to delay in dealing with the later intakes.
