HC Deb 22 October 1946 vol 427 c1480
62. Mr. Garry Allighan

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has decided the matter of deduction of Income Tax from certain naval categories who were prisoners of war, including the case which the hon. Member for Gravesend submitted; and whether he will now make a statement.

Mr. Dalton

I think my hon. Friend has in mind ex gratia payments made to a small number of temporary civilian personnel who were prisoners of war. These payments were not liable to Income Tax.

Mr. Allighan

Is my right hon. Friend aware that I have a letter from the Treasury stating that deductions were made in respect of Income Tax? If it is not so, for what reason were deductions made?

Mr. Dalton

My information is that there has been some considerable correspondence between my hon. Friend and the Treasury. If he will turn up the latest letter from the Treasury he will find the truth as stated in my answer.
