§ 28. Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for War the number of British and Sudanese troops now stationed in Eritrea; what restrictions on public meetings and the Press now exist in Eritrea; 1461 and how many Eritrean leaders have been arrested, tried or kept in confinement during the last six months.
§ Mr. BellengerIt is not the practice to make public figures of the strength of our Forces in particular overseas theatres, although it will have been seen from the Press that the Sudanese troops previously stationed in Asmara have been withdrawn and relieved by British troops. There is no restriction on free expression of opinion nor on the right of association and assembly in Eritrea. The chief administrator is, of course, empowered to intervene and it is clearly his duty to do so if the exercise of these rights leads to, or may reasonably be expected to lead to a breach of the peace. The administration is being asked for detailed information concerning the number of Eritrean leaders arrested, tried and kept in confinement during the last six months.
§ Mr. SorensenCan my right hon. Friend give the number of Eritrean leaders against whom charges have been made and would he not consider the release of any Eritrean leaders in captivity?
§ Mr. BellengerYes, Sir. I think that some review will be given to their sentences periodically.
§ Mr. SorensenCan my right hon. Friend say whether a large number are under detention?
§ Mr. BellengerNo, I cannot give the exact number in answer to this Question.
