HC Deb 22 October 1946 vol 427 cc1478-9
59. Mr. Boothby

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what agreement or understanding was reached between His Majesty's Government and the Government of the U.S.A., in the course of the negotiations for a loan, regarding the method of repayment of our sterling obligations; and why it was not communicated to this House.

Mr. Dalton

I have nothing to add to my reply to the hon. Member on 28th May last.

Mr. Boothby

Has the attention of the right hon. Gentleman been called to an authoritative statement made in the American Press that such agreement was arrived at and is borne out by the recent agreement made between this country and the Argentine?

Mr. Dalton

The recent agreement made between this country and the Argentine was no part of any private arrangement with the United States. It was arrived at in British interests and it has been welcomed by all competent judges.
