asked the Minister of Transport how many toll bridges and roads are at present operated by local authorities.

Mr. Barnes

Tolls are at present collected by or on behalf of the local authorities on 11 toll bridges and two toll roads.

Mr. Shepherd

Will the right hon. Gentleman rake step? to eliminate these local authority toll bridges and roads, as they are an unnecessary irritation in the year 1946?

Mr. Barnes

We are very anxious to do so and we encourage local authorities whenever possible.
