Mr. Jannerasked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that large premiums are being requested as a consideration for the granting or transfer of 1769 leases and other tenancies of some houses and flats; and whether he will take steps to deal with this position in respect of those cases where the Rent Acts do not afford protection against such demands.
§ Mr. BevanThe reply to the first part of the Question is "Yes, Sir." As regards the second part, the matter is one which will be considered in connection with the proposed review of the Rent Restrictions Acts, but I can hold out no prospect of early legislation.
§ Mr. JannerIn view of the serious position created by the large premiums which are being demanded and in view of the fact that the objects of the rent control Acts are thus being frustrated, cannot my right hon. Friend see about introducing a short Measure to remedy this particular position?
§ Mr. BevanThe possibility of Parliamentary time being made available for legislation is not a question which should be addressed to me but to the Prime Minister or the Leader of the House.
