§ 11. Mr. Gammansasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that over 40 properties owned by British firms and individuals in Shanghai are still occupied by Chinese Government forces; and if he has made, or will make, any representations to the Chinese Government asking that these properties should be released at an early date.
§ Mr. MayhewMany British properties both in Shanghai and elsewhere in China are still occupied by various Chinese Government organs. Frequent representations have been made to the Chinese Government about this unsatisfactory state of affairs and I can assure the hon. Member that the matter will continue to be pressed.
§ Mr. GammansWhat answers have been given to the representations which His Majesty's Government have made regard-ink these properties? Have answers been received, or have the representations been ignored?
§ Mr. MayhewNo, Sir. Answers have been given, but it is the actions which are a bit slow, and we hope very much that the position will be remedied by prompter action.
