HC Deb 21 November 1946 vol 430 cc995-6
6. Mr. Lipson

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will grant an increased petrol allowance to ex-Service-men who require it for business purposes.

Mr. Shinwell

Supplementary petrol allowances are granted to motorists who use their cars for business purposes, but I could not justify the grant of larger allowances to ex-Servicemen than to others engaged in similar businesses.

Mr. Lipson

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the supplementary allowances are quite inadequate in a very large number of cases, and that his answer will cause a great deal of disappointment to many classes of ex-Servicemen, who sacrificed their businesses to join up, and who now find that they cannot resume owing to restrictions Which they are convinced are unnecessary?

Mr. Shinwell

If the hon. Member has any evidence about inadequacy of petrol allowances in the case of ex-Servicemen, I shall be glad to have the information.

Mr. Lipson

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that I have sent a large number of cases to his Department, and that invariably there has been a refusal of any extra allowance?
