HC Deb 21 November 1946 vol 430 cc1024-5
81. Mr. George Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will issue a general instruction to clerks of the peace that veterinary surgeons should be granted exemption from service as jurors.

Mr. Ede

I have no authority to issue any such instruction. Exemption from jury service is governed by statutory provisions and legislation would be required for the purpose which my hon. Friend has in mind.

Mr. Solley

May I ask my right hon. Friend whether, when such new legislation is being considered, account will be taken of the necessity of adequately reimbursing existing jurors for the expenses they incur when compelled to undertake jury service?

Mr. Ede

Of course, the whole of the matter will be borne in mind, but I should not propose to pay veterinary surgeons more than doctors.
