§ 60. Mr. James Callaghanasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will make a further statement on counting unestablished service in Government Departments for pension purposes and the granting of Civil Service pensions to the age-barred officers.
§ Mr. DaltonYes, Sir. I have now received from the Civil Service National Whitley Council a unanimous report with recommendations, which I have accepted, on the measures to give effect to the concession which I announced on 28th May. This report is being published today as a White Paper. Age-barred officers, who have already retired, and who think they may now be eligible for a pension, should apply to the Department in which they were working at the time of retirement, in order that their claim may be investigated.
§ Mr. CallaghanIs my right hon. Friend aware that the spirit in which these negotiations have been conducted will give the deepest satisfaction to civil servants; and that we hope he will have as much luck in clearing up a number of other cesspools left by the party opposite?
§ Mr. DaltonYes, Sir. We advance from cesspool to cesspool, doing our best with our inheritance. I am much obliged to my hon. Friend for the question; it has been a very good job, and great credit is due to all parties concerned.
§ Mr. W. J. BrownIs the Chancellor aware that even the hon. Gentleman the Member for Rugby feels a certain sense of benevolence towards the Government?
