§ 26. Mr. G. Porterasked the President of the Board of Trade what steps he is taking to help the makers of utility furniture to dispose of the large supplies of tables and sideboards, etc., which are at present stored in their factories.
§ Mr. MarquandWe have recently arranged that manufacturers may accept orders from any part of the country where there is an unsatisfied demand, instead of, as previously, only in a limited zone. The Scottish, Northern and North Midland regions are those most in need of supplies of dining room furniture at present.
§ 32. Mr. Dodds-Parkerasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will take the control off the sale of kitchen cabinets and easy chairs in category 2A, in view of the heavy stocks being carried in shops and warehouses.
§ Mr. MarquandNo, Sir. The total quantities of furniture available in relation to the actual and potential demand are not yet sufficient to permit unrestricted supply of these articles of utility furniture.
§ Mr. Dodds-ParkerWould the hon. Gentleman consider trying, for a period of, say, six months, reducing the numbers of units necessary for each of these articles, in order to enable the stocks to be cleared?
§ Mr. MarquandI will undertake that that suggestion shall be looked into.
