HC Deb 04 November 1946 vol 428 cc1051-2
62. Major Wise

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he is aware that large quantities of wheat are coming on to the market and being classified as non-millable; and, as this is the direct result of the exceptionally bad harvesting conditions and is involving producers in uncontrollable heavy losses, if he will consider taking immediate steps to increase the price of non-millable wheat harvested in 1946.

Mr. T. Williams

It is not yet possible to estimate with any accuracy the proportion of the current year's wheat crop which is likely to prove non-millable. Adjustments in the seasonal scale have made it possible to raise the maximum price of non-millable wheat by 1d. per cwt. from 1st Nocember, but I am not prepared to alter crop prices either way on account of weather conditions.

Mr. Turton

Can the Minister make a greater proportion of this non-millable wheat available to the poultry keepers?

Mr. Williams

I imagine that a considerable quantity of non-millable wheat will find its way in that direction.
