HC Deb 04 November 1946 vol 428 cc1030-1
19. Dr. Barnett Stross

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will make a statement on the present position of the Japanese ceramics industry.

Mr. Marquand

I have no definite information about the present position of the Japanese ceramics industry.

20. Dr. B. Stross

asked the President of the Board of Trade what was the volume and value of Japanese pottery imported into Britain in 1938.

Mr. Marquand

The value of the pottery imported from Japan in 1938 was £84,346. The weight was approximately 1,000 tons.

Dr. Stross

Is the Minister aware that the pottery industry in Britain have had to face some very unfair forms of competition inasmuch as we have had an imitation of our patterns, designs, and the names of our manufacturers, and will he take steps in future to see that we have further protection in this respect?

Mr. Marquand

Yes, Sir. The whole question of the possibility of unfair competition is now receiving very careful attention.

Mr. Ellis Smith

Will my hon. Friend inform his right hon. and learned Friend that his statement on the future of Japanese industry has created consternation and indignation throughout industry?

Mr. Marquand

The hon. Member, and others concerned, will have an opportunity to tell us that tomorrow, I understand.
