HC Deb 04 November 1946 vol 428 c1025
6. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that excessive prices are being charged by hotels and boarding-house keepers for food and accommodation, and that this tends, especially in holiday resorts, to diminish the value of holidays with pay; and if he will immediately introduce legislation fixing maximum prices to be charged by such establishments, so that holidays with pay may have full beneficial effect.

Mr. Marquand

The Catering Wages Commission are at present conducting an inquiry into charges for holiday board and lodging. With regard to the second part of the Question, I shall await the results of the Commission's inquiry.

Mr. Hughes

Is my hon. Friend aware that in certain holiday resorts there is a voluntary control; and all hotel keepers are not extortionate, and that those who are, racketeer at the public expense and at the expense of their fellows; and that this should be evened out by Government controls, so that holidays with pay may be a reality? Will my hon. Friend take steps to effect that?

Mr. Marquand

As I said, we are awaiting the report of the Commission.
