HC Deb 30 May 1946 vol 423 cc1348-9
64. Vice-Admiral Taylor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what the index figure for food and the index figure for the cost of living would be without the food subsidy of £335,000,000.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr. Dalton)

Without the subsidies, and assuming no change in costs, the food index figure would be about 60 per cent, and the cost of living, index figure about 55 per cent, above the prewar level.
