HC Deb 28 May 1946 vol 423 c985
53. Mr. Cobb

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether television receivers which will shortly be on sale again will be subject to Purchase Tax.

Mr. Dalton

Yes, Sir. Television receivers, like other wireless receiving sets, are chargeable with Purchase Tax at 33⅓ per cent., if they are of the domestic or portable type.

Mr. Cobb

Would the Chancellor bear in mind that we can only export television receivers in the future if British transmitters are used abroad, and that that will depend on rapid progress in the home market, which will be retarded by the incidence of Purchase Tax?

Mr. Dalton

That would be a suitable matter to discuss on the Committee stage of the Finance Bill, and while I am make no commitment, I shall be very glad to hear the argument.
