HC Deb 28 May 1946 vol 423 c964

The following Question stood upon the Order Paper:

10. Lieut.-Colonel Sir THOMAS MOORE,— To ask the Minister of Works what is the estimated cost of restoring and recon structing the terrace houses in Regent's Park; and how does the interest on the capital sum involved compare with the prewar rents received.

Sir T. Moore

In view of the courteous explanation that the right hon. Gentleman has given me in writing, I do not propose to ask this Question.

11. Sir T. Moore

asked the Minister of Works how many civil servants it is pro posed to accommodate in the terrace houses of Regent's Park.

Mr. Tomlinson

It is estimated that about 5,000 civil servants can be accommodated in the houses in Regent's Park which have been taken over for use as Government offices.

Sir T. Moore

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that before the bombing took place there were over 1,000 people accommodated in these houses; and will he take steps to ensur3 that those homeless people be returned to their homes at the earliest possible date?

Mr. Kirkwood

Are they members of the working class?

Sir T. Moore

Are not we entitled to them, as workers?

Mr. Tomlinson

I do not see how that can be done with this property, in view of the decision that has been taken. I am just as anxious as the hon. and gallant Gentleman to see that they are rehoused.
