HC Deb 27 May 1946 vol 423 c831
73. Vice-Admiral Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in order that free elections on democratic lines, in accordance with the Yalta agreement, can be carried out in Poland, freedom of speech and Press and political meetings in preparation for the elections is permitted by the National Provisional Government to all political parties.

Mr. McNeil

My right hon. Friend is not satisfied that all democratic and anti-Nazi parties in practice enjoy equal freedom in these respects.

Vice-Admiral Taylor

Will the Under-Secretary take steps to impress the necessity for freedom of speech in the Press and at the elections, otherwise the elections will be an absolute farce? What steps does he propose to take in the matter?

Mr. McNeil

I am sure the hon. and gallant Member knows that the Warsaw Government are under no misapprehension about the attitude of His Majesty's Government on this subject.

Vice-Admiral Taylor

But they do not seem to mind very much.
