§ 2. Mr. Solleyasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that Cypriots are denied the right of trial by jury; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.
§ Mr. georģe HallI am aware that there is no provision of trial by jury in Cyprus. Cases of importance are tried by three judges. I do not know of any general wish in Cyprus for a change in this pro- 346 cedure, but I am making inquiry of the Governor.
§ Mr. SolleyIs my right hon. Friend aware that members of the Pan-Cyprian Trade Unions Committee were tried by three judges appointed by the Colonial Office and not by their countrymen? Would he not think it proper to give the right of trial by their own countrymen to these men?
§ Mr. HallI think the Cypriots should know what they want themselves. We have heard nothing from them or any complaint as to the system of government, but I am making inquiries.
§ Mr. GallacherIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that Cypriots know what they want and have been demanding it for a long time — a democratic regime in Cyprus?
