HC Deb 25 March 1946 vol 421 cc11-2
32. Mr. Sparks

asked the Minister of War Transport if he is aware of the intensification of peak hour travel congestion upon L.P.T.B. omnibus and train routes in Central London as a result of the abandonment of staggered hours of duty for the staffs of Government offices and other commercial concerns, and of the danger arising from overcrowded railway platforms; and in view of these conditions, if he will urge the adoption of the system of staggered hours of duty in London offices and other commercial concerns.

Mr. Barnes

I am aware that the volume of travel in London at peak hours is increasing and am examining the situation with the London Passenger Transport Board. Meanwhile I take this opportunity of stating to all concerned that unless the systematic staggering of hours of arrival and departure is maintained it will be impossible to avoid serious congestion and discomfort of travel at peak hours.

Mr. Sparks

Is the Minister aware that in many cases passengers see seven or eight trains pass through before they are able to get a seat? Is he aware also of the danger of people being pushed off the platform as the result of the crowd surging up from the rear? Will he give some attention to the matter, because I think it is a real danger at the present time?

Mr. Barnes

My answer has shown that I am very well aware of that problem, and I think it will be remedied.
