HC Deb 25 March 1946 vol 421 cc29-30
66. Mr. H. Hynd

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether any arrangements have yet been agreed with the Dominion of Canada for a resumption of emigration to that country.

The Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Mr. Parker)

I would refer my hon. Friend to what is stated in the White Paper (Cmd. 6658) of June last as to the attitude of His Majesty's Government in Canada on this question. There are no further developments to report.

Mr. Hynd

In view of the recent more definite announcement in regard to emigration to Australia, does not the Minister think that more up-to-date information about emigration to Canada is called for?

Mr. Parker

The Canadian Government are anxious, first of all, to settle the problem of their own ex-Service men returning home, arid, secondly, to deal with the question of demobilisation of people from their war industries who have not been resettled. When these two problems are well under the way to settlement, then they will consider the question of immigration.

Mr. Hector Hughes

Is the Minister aware that there are a number of Canadians in this country awaiting repatriation, and do the arrangements he has referred to include such persons?

Mr. Parker

That is a matter for the Canadian Government.
