HC Deb 21 March 1946 vol 420 cc2020-1
66. Mr. Orr-Ewing

asked the Minister of Health what is the reason for the delay in commencing site works for temporary houses at South Clevedon playing fields, Clevedon, Somerset.

Mr. Bevan

The preliminary preparation work on this site is virtually complete. It has been agreed that the Council should also undertake the slabbing and other work within the curtilage of the houses on behalf of the Ministry of Works. Their contractor's tender is too high and I understand that negotiations are proceeding in order to obtain a reduction.

Mr. Orr-Ewing

Is the right hon. Gentle man aware that the council were informed in this case that the terms of the proposed contract were satisfactory? How is it that now the proposed contract has become unsatisfactory?

Mr. Bevan

There is obviously a conflict in the inquiries.

Mr. Orr-Ewing

Could the Minister see that these conflicts take a rather shorter time in order to get ahead with housing?

Mr. Bevan

The hon. Gentleman is generalising now from a fact which is in doubt.

Mr. De la Bère

Can a fact be in doubt?
