HC Deb 14 March 1946 vol 420 cc1282-3
53. Air-Commodore Harvey

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how many German fishing vessels over 90 feet in length are operating from ports in the British zone in Germany; and has British fishing gear and equipment been supplied to Germany.

Mr. J. Hynd

Sixty-seven. Another 69 are in course of re-conversion from war service. No British fishing gear or equipment has been supplied to Germany.

Air-Commodore Harvey

Will the Minister continue to do all that he can to get the German fishing fleet to sea in order to supplement their own food rations without drawing on this country?

Mr. Hynd

The future policy towards the German fishing fleets is being considered at the present time. There are a number of questions to be examined very closely, including the restrictions to be imposed on the size of the fleets and their operation, and also the building capacity which is to be allowed to German peace economy to enable these operations to be undertaken.
